Advocating for change at the Local, State and Nation Level

Deborah’s Place has long understood that homelessness is caused by the lack of living wage jobs and the lack of adequate healthcare. These systemic causes of homelessness are often compounded by violence, mental illness and addiction.

We work on the local, state and national level in coalition and collaboration with other social service and homeless service agencies to advocate for systemic change.

We remain committed to a future in which homelessness is eradicated, by advocating for:

  • Increases in the supply of affordable housing
  • A living wage
  • Improvement of healthcare to the underinsured and uninsured

The efforts include:

  • Conducting voter registration and voter turnout campaigns at each of our buildings. This includes providing opportunities for tenants to be trained and serve as election judges.
  • Participation with Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) at all our sites.
  • Membership in advocacy groups and organizations to work toward policies that support affordable housing, sustainable income and improved healthcare for people who are homeless and at risk of homelessness.
